A lecture by leading historian Victor Mallia-Milanes, Professor in the Department of History at the University of Malta.

Malta of 1530 and Malta of 1798 were two essentially different islands. The ever-widening distinction between the two was radical and structural. Behind this slow but steady long-term process of change lay the powerful force of Hospitaller philosophy. It was this philosophy in its widest manifestation, and the way it was put into practice, that gradually transformed the character of the island's society, economy, and indeed its culture. The talk will endeavour to explore the nature of these changes.
