Mattia Preti revisited this weekend! Print Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

To mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of the great Calabrian artist Mattia Preti (1613-99), the organizers of the Mediterranea Festival, now in its 12th edition, have invited artist and art historian Mark Sagona, who is also a Ph.D. candidate and visiting lecturer in the Department of History of Art at the University of Malta, to conduct an on-site lecture on the subject.  In his lecture entitled ‘Mattia Preti and his influence on Maltese painting’, Sagona will be discussing the influence of the art of Il Cavalier Calabrese on contemporary and subsequent Maltese painting through a selection of paintings in the churches of Gozo.  Apart from the three well-known altarpieces by Preti on the island, the on-site lecture will thus also focus on the works which show the stylistic, technical and chromatic influence of Preti’s works.  The event will take place this Saturday 9th November and will start at the church of St Augustine in Victoria at 0900, subsequently moving to other sites in Gozo, concluding at around 1300.  Price, including transport is €10; concession for students €5.  Booking is essential: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
