Following last year's spectacular production of La Boheme, a direct hit with opera aficionados, Teatru Astra is poised to fly even higher with a new production of Verdi's Aida. The splendid production team at Teatru Astra, spearheaded by music director Joseph Vella and artistic director Enrico Stinchelli, is the guarantee of yet another outstanding offering in a long and glittering history of opera in this theatre.
The swing from La Boheme could not be starker: out of the decadent Parisian lifestyle we glide over the Nile into the outwardly lavish realm of the Pharaohs and delve into the entrapments of love and loyalty towards the divine ruler of Egypt.
This is the third time Teatru Astra is producing Aida, the last being in 1999, an illustrious production still vivid in opera enthusiasts' memories.
Scheduled for Thursday 27th and Saturday 29th of October 2016 at 19.30hrs, Aida will kick-start the 14th edition of Festival Mediterranea, an annual festival of culture that seeks to showcase that for which the island of Gozo is well-known in the cultural field: opera, music, drama, art, history, crafts and traditions.
