'Design and Decoration for Ecclesiastical Gozo 1800-1900: Recent Important Discoveries' is the title of a talk to be given by Mark Sagona on Friday at 7pm at the Gozo Ministry conference hall, Victoria.

The talk, being held as part of Festival Mediterranea 2015, analyses the artistic significance of unsung 19th-century ecclesiastical decorative works which enhance Gozo’s national and international artistic heritage.

Sagona is a visual artist and art scholar and a visiting lecturer at the History of Art Department of the University’s Faculty of Arts. His recent doctoral thesis on the subject throws new light on a staggering amount of little-known or completely unknown works in silver, wood carving and embroidery produced by some of the finest workshops in Rome, Milan, Paris and Lyon, as well as in Malta. A remarkable number of these works were acquired by Gozitan churches.
